I’m watching with some amusement a discussion on a marketing board about whether indie authors have shot themselves in the foot about giving away free books. Large ARC and promotion teams have always been a part of publishing, even in the dinosaur days pre-eBook. Back then the ARCs were always print and often had a banner on the cover that said “Advanced Reading Copy NOT FOR RESALE”, but since I found a couple of them in our local used book store, that didn’t stop people from selling them and the books getting out “into the wild” before publication day.
